“Organic farming: a sustainable model for transition in the Mediterranean”

ANCONA, 10-11 May 2012

The general theme of the 1st International workshop GRAB-IT is “Organic farming: a sustainable model for transition in the Mediterranean”. The Mediterranean region is living an epochal transition, not only in terms of political and civil rights but also with respect to climate change and the availability of water and energy resources.

Sustainable development is a global objective that aims to respond to the needs of current generations without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their own needs. The Millennium Development Goals, approved by 189 countries in September 2000, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, adopted in 2002 by the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), emphasize the need to change unsustainable production and consumption patterns and to protect and manage natural resources sustainably for economic and social development, to safeguard health and integrate the objective of sustainable development more effectively into the process of globalization. The WSSD also calls for regional and national strategies in recognition that sustainable development cannot be achieved in isolation and that international presctiptions have to be adapted to local circumstances and to the conditions of the eco-region.
Despite the progress made, there is a lantent but growing awareness throughout the Mediterranean that current development trends are unsustainable: the environment in the Mediterranean forms the basis for the development of the region, and it is crucial to put an end to the environmental degradation that is already giving rise to very high economic and social costs, (Mediterranean Action Plan - 10th Meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development - MCSD - June 2005, Athens).

The challenge is to find new opportunities for the development of a more sustainable society facing the threat of global warming and perspective resource depletion. From this point of view it is crucial to focus on the development of renewable energy resources in combination with a more efficient use of energy. Knowledge of decision-making, organisation, rules and regulations, policies and economic processes and people behaviour in relation to climate and energy changes are essential. This gives the opportunities to control the development of renewable energy resources with the aim to preserve the environment and to maintain livelyhood and quality of life.

What is and what will be in the future the role of organic farming in the transition phase towards a more fair and sustainable economic system and towards an economic model where the water and oil are getting scarcer and valuable resources?

Papers are welcomed from all fields of organic farming  covering a wide range of topics including:

1. Mediterranean Organic Farming and new consumption models;
